Oftentimes, whenever I hear various Hollywood news stories, I get the feeling that it’s a town that runs in dog years.
Take this news for example.
A mere seven years after the release of the big screen adaptation of Daredevil, 20th Century Fox is already reportedly developing a reboot for the Marvel Comics character.
Fox is compelled to do a reboot if they want to keep the movie rights for the character. The script is reportedly being prepared already.
The original movie was directed by Mark Steven Johnson and starred Ben Affleck as Matt Murdoch / Daredevil and Jennifer Garner as Elektra. If you think reboots only happen to movies that underperform at the box office, then think again. Daredevil actually earned $179.2 million dollars worldwide, which is a decent take.
In a way, the news of the Daredevil reboot shouldn’t be so surprising. Talk about reboots have been circulating ever since Disney bought Marvel a few months ago.
Warner acquires remake rights for first Vengeance movie
I don’t why I still write about these remakes because I generally hate them — but this one deserves its own space. Seriously.
Apparently, Hollywood has been on a Park Chan Wook feeding frenzy. The Korean director has managed to build a very serious filmography, highlighted by his Vengeance trilogy of movies that should be seen to be believed (it’s that AWESOME!). Hollywood execs are stumbling over each other acquiring remake rights to his films. I’ve heard that someone already got the rights to Old Boy, probably Park’s best movie.
But Warner Bros. just wouldn’t want to be left behind. The studio announced that it has acquired the remake rights to the first movie in Park’s Vengeance trilogy. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance kicks off the Vengeance films with quite a bang. I won’t give you a lame-ass synopsis of the movie because the plot is just too delicious to give away. Rest assured though that it is one hell of a ride and quite gut wrenching.
According to Warner Brian Tucker, who wrote Broken City, has been hired to write the script. No news yet on who will direct this, I’m pretty sure, lame remake.
The Orphanage remake announced
Yet another remake has been announced.
I knew that when The Orphanage, the Guillermo del Toro – produced and Juan Antonio Bayona directed horror film was released and gained great reviews from critics worldwide that Hollywood won’t be able to keep its talons off this beautiful film.
New Line / Warner Bros. has announced that it will embark on a remake of The Orphanage. Instead of hiring original director Bayona, the studio has announced that it has signed Mark Pellington to direct the English language remake.
Even though Bayona will not be sitting on the director’s chair for this remake, Guillermo del Toro will still be involved as one of the producers (along with Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson). Del Toro will also co-write (along with Larry Fessenden) the script for the remake. With Del Toro’s close involvement in the remake there is hope that this is not going to suck as much as the other Hollywood remakes that essentially just butcher the source material for the sole purpose of Americanizing it.
Director Pellington’s previous credits include Arlington Road, The Mothman Prophecies and Henry Poole is Here. He also directed the concert movie U23D. So in the directorial front, it looks like there is a bit of promise too. Let’s hope that the Hollywood version of the The Orphanage is a refreshing interpretation of a wonderful Spanish horror movie.
Cronenberg to remake his Fly remake, film fans’ heads spin
Movie remakes in Hollywood are being developed at a fairly regular rate of late. I’ve always maintained that it’s Hollywood running out of original ideas and just zeroing in on a quick buck. I’ve already accepted it as par for the course.
But what made me do a double-take was news of a remake OF A REMAKE. And no less than acclaimed director David Cronenberg is behind this.
Cronenberg is reportedly developing a remake of The Fly, which he famously remade in 1986 with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. Of course, the original The Fly movie was released in 1958 and has been one of the venerated sci-fi classics. Cronenberg will be directing the new remake and will probably also write the screenplay.
It makes you think — what do you call a remake of a remake?
Inspirational Movies Ideal for Geeks
Geeks love movies whether it’s about a high-tech production, one that’s based on a comic hero, an action or adventure film with a futuristic setting or even one with a horror twist. They go for films that let their imaginations work, those that allow them to create their own worlds although not necessarily in the sense of encouraging them to make it a reality.
There have been movies in the past that provided a lot of inspiration to geeks. But then again, there are also many new and upcoming films that have great potential in attracting this set of movie fans who love technology.
The Classics
The Matrix, a science fiction action film, was a big hit in 1999. Starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne, the movie that took place in a dystopian future boasts of rapid twists and turns that were created through a visual effect called “bullet time.” [Read more…]
