Next time you look at a dog, be careful. You might get arrested.

A prosecutor in Chelsea, Vermont has dropped charges against a woman who was arrested for staring at and making faces at a police dog.

No, this is not Jayna Hutchinson. She’s another woman who thinks her dog looks like Brad Pitt (bull)! 

“Prosecuting a woman for ‘staring’ at a police dog is absurd,” said her lawyer. “People are allowed to make faces at police dogs and officers to express their disapproval. It’s constitutional expression,” said public defender Kelly Green, who represented Jayna Hutchinson.

Hutchinson, 33, of Lebanon, New Hampshire, was charged with cruelty to a police animal and resisting arrest after a July 31 incident in which police were called to a market to investigate a report of a brawl. They were approached by Hutchinson, who told one officer she had been assaulted the day before by one of the men involved.

She asked Vermont State Police Sgt. Todd Protzman to take her statement but he refused, telling her she smelled like alcohol and was drunk but that he would take her statement at another time.

After a heated exchange, she approached Protzman’s cruiser, where his dog Max was waiting, putting her face within inches of the window and “staring at him in a taunting/harassing manner,” Protzman wrote in an affidavit.

Officers arrested Hutchinson, adding the resisting arrest charge because she pulled her arms and upper body away during the arrest. She registered 0.21 percent blood-alcohol content on a breath test, more than twice the legal limit for drivers in Vermont.

Her fiery screams and sizzling tears were not enough to melt the cold, cold heart of justice.

In a real-life drama that could easily be mistaken for scenes in a day-time soap, Paris Hilton was sent screaming and crying back to jail on Friday after a judge ruled that she must serve out her sentence behind bars rather than in the comfort of her Hollywood Hills home.

“It’s not right!” shouted Hilton, who violated her probation in a reckless driving case. “Mom!” she cried out to her mother.

Hours earlier, the 26-year-old hotel heiress was taken handcuffed from her home in a black-and-white police car, paparazzi sprinting in pursuit and helicopters broadcasting live from above. She entered the courtroom disheveled and weeping, hair askew, without makeup, wearing a fuzzy gray sweat shirt over slacks.

She cried throughout the hearing, dabbing her eyes, and her body shook constantly. Several times she turned to her parents, seated behind her in the courtroom, and mouthed, “I love you.”

Hilton’s entire body trembled as the final verdict was made for her further incarceration. She clutched a ball of tissue and tears ran down her face.

Seconds later, the judge announced his decision: “The defendant is remanded to county jail to serve the remainder of her 45-day sentence. This order is forthwith.”

Hilton screamed.

Eight deputies immediately ordered all spectators out of the courtroom. Hilton’s mother, Kathy, threw her arms around her husband, Rick, and sobbed uncontrollably.

Deputies escorted Hilton out of the room, holding each of her arms as she looked back.

Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer castigated Sheriff Lee Baca for the latter’s earlier decision to release Hilton three days into her sentence due to an unspecified “medical condition.”

“I at no time condoned the actions of the sheriff and at no time told him I approved the actions,” Sauer said. “At no time did I approve the defendant being released from custody to her home.”

Hilton’s attorney, Richard Hutton, implored the judge to order a hearing in his chambers to hear testimony about Hilton’s medical condition before making a decision. The judge did not respond to that suggestion.

Another of her attorneys, Steve Levine, said, “The sheriff has determined that because of her medical situation, (jail) is a dangerous place for her.”

Hilton’s twisted jailhouse saga began Sept. 7, when she failed a sobriety test after police saw her weaving down a street in her Mercedes-Benz on what she said was a late-night hamburger run.

She pleaded no contest to reckless driving and was sentenced to 36 months’ probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines. In the months that followed she was stopped twice while driving on a suspended license. The second stop landed her in Sauer’s courtroom.

What to do with poor, poor Paris? There should be a compromise that would not violate or demean the law but at the same time keep Paris from suffering from unnecessary emotional distress which could affect her wellbeing.

The law, no matter how harsh, would not want people to suffer needlessly.

So, any bright idea out there on what compromise need to be done in Paris’ case?

For me, well, since house arrest has been ruled out, may be allowing her most precious possession to join her in jail could alleviate her misery. So … let the doggie out of the house and into her prison cell!

Clothes banned in the Netherlands

Clothes suddenly became out of fashion — in fact banned (!) – in Amsterdam, the Netherlands last Sunday.

Some 2,000 men and women posed only in their “birthday suits” on a bridge over one of Amsterdam’s historic canals — a unique sight even in a city famed for its relaxed attitude toward nudity and sex.

They were participating in a series of four nude group photos in the city in the early hours of the morning as part of the latest project of U.S. photographer Spencer Tunick.

The first and largest composition was in a decidedly prosaic location: a parking garage on the outer ring of the city.

But what the location lacked in romance, it made up for in style. Participants lined the railings of the garage’s twin circular towers, creating a pattern of multicolor stripes against the white building and an overcast sky.

The women on bikes were selected from the larger group and posed with their chins pointed triumphantly upward toward the sky.

Other compositions included a group of men posing together near the parking garage and a mixed group of men and women on another bridge.

Tunick, from Brooklyn, N.Y., has become famous for photographing thousands of naked people in public settings worldwide, from London and Vienna to Buenos Aires and Buffalo. He set a record for naked photography with a photo of 18,000 people in the buff in Mexico City last month.

Finally, a college degree for world’s richest man

Could you believe this? The world’s richest man, the founder and owner of the richest company in the world, was once a college dropout?

Yes, it’s true. Fortunately, after more than 30 years of wearing the “college dropout” sticker on his forehead, Microsoft Corp’s Bill Gates has finally got himself a college degree last Thursday when he collected his honorary law degree.

“We recognize the most illustrious member of the Harvard College class of 1977 never to have graduated from Harvard,” said Harvard University Provost Steven Hyman. “It seems high time that his alma mater hand over the diploma.”

“I’ve been waiting for more than 30 years to say this, Dad, I always told you I’d come back and get my degree,” Gates, 51, told the crowd, which included his father, also named Bill.

“I’ll be changing my job next year, and it will be nice to finally have a college degree on my résumé,” said Gates in a reference to his plan to shift full-time into philanthropy.

The lack of a degree didn’t slow Gates’ rise to the top echelons of business.

In 1980, Gates and his colleagues at Microsoft were canny enough to negotiate an agreement with International Business Machines Corp. that gave the start-up software company the right to license its operating system for a new generation of personal computers to other manufacturers.

That arrangement ultimately turned the computer business on its ear, shifting power from hardware manufacturers to software programmers. Today, hundreds of companies manufacture hundreds of thousands of brand-name personal computers each year, but more than 90 percent of those machines use Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

Her jail clock has started ticking – each tick measured in dollars, for the money she would earn 23 days later when she completes her jail term and recalls her life behind bars to a global media breathlessly following her every move.

At 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, 2007, hotel heiress Paris Hilton surrendered herself to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Los Angeles, California where she was booked and transported to the women’s facility.

Only hours earlier, she was on the red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards, wearing a strapless black dress.

The socialite smiled stoically in the face of jokes at her expense and as people cheered her upcoming incarceration.

The ceremony’s host, Sarah Silverman, drew loud cheers just by mentioning her upcoming date with the law.

The raunchy comedian joked that the bars of Hilton’s cell would be painted like penises to make her feel more comfortable, but noted: “I just worry that she’s going to break her teeth on those things.”

“I am trying to be strong right now. I’m ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me, and that’s really helpful,” she said after the show.

After turning heads at the award show, Paris headed over to the jail to check in. And from all accounts, she was a perfect lady. “Her demeanor was helpful. She was focused, she was cooperative,” said sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore.

After being fingerprinted, Hilton was issued a jail uniform and given her first meal –bread, juice, and cereal. She is determined to be like everyone else to dispel the common opinion that she wouldn’t be able to handle being treated “normal.”

“I did have a choice to go to a pay jail,” Paris told reporters. “But I declined because I feel like the media portrays me in a way that I’m not and that’s why I wanted to go to county, to show that I can do it and I’m going to be treated like everyone else. I’m going to do the time, I’m going to do it the right way.”

Paris admitted she was frightened as she traded her Guccis and designer clothes for jail garb to begin serving a 23-day sentence for violating probation.

“This is an important point in my life and I need to take responsibility for my actions. In the future, I plan on taking more of an active role in the decisions I make … Although I am scared, I am ready to begin my jail sentence,” Paris was quoted as saying.

Her trip to the county jail was done out of the glare of photographers staking out the facility.

Hilton was arrested for drunken driving in September, and in January, she pleaded no contest — the equivalent of a guilty plea — to a reduced charge of alcohol-related reckless driving. She was sentenced to three years’ probation and had her license suspended.

But the heiress was caught driving on a suspended license in February when police stopped her for going over the speed limit with her headlights out at night. A traffic court judge ruled on May 4 that Hilton’s latest offense constituted a probation violation and sentenced her to 45 days in jail.

Hilton will be held in a unit for celebrities and high-profile inmates at the jail. The unit is separated from the general prison population, officials have said.
