Hey guys, do you have any plans this weekend? I am off to visit family on Saturday and Sunday but I might squeeze in a movie before doing so and the one at the top of my list is Renee Zellweger’s New In Town. It is a very light movie, rated PG-13 – perfect for a weekend break from a long harrowing week.
From what I have read, the movie is about Lucy Hill, a corporate player who has high flying ambitions – to become president of the company one day. In her effort to impress her boss, she flies from Florida to Minnesota to oversee a small factory. Hence the “new in town” description I guess. The plot seems to be pretty easy to follow – new big city girl meets local boy. First they dislike each other and then gets to know each other and end up in one another’s arms.
Of course, there are other elements to the story, like Lucy receiving orders to shut the plant down. However, she saves the day somehow by thinking of a way for the plant to make money and thus satisfy the corporate bigwigs.
Looking back at what I have just written, I am pretty sure that this movie will be a no brainer. So why do I still have the desire to see it? Well, for one, we all need no brainers every now and then. Two, Renee Zellweger has been quite successful in portraying funny characters – and her Lucy Hill character has her own brand of funny, or so I’ve heard. Oh, it doesn’t hurt that Harry Connick Jr. is the co-star.
Jennifer Aniston Comes Out On Top
While many would argue that the issue is all about the films in question and not the marital affairs (or lack thereof) of the actors involved, there is no doubt that the two ideas cannot be separated in the case of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. These two had a highly publicized falling out when Brad Pitt wandered and ended up with Angelina Jolie. Jennifer Aniston was recently quoted as saying some not so happy things about the current couple.
At the end of the day, however, movie sales are what we are all about and it seems that Jennifer Aniston came out on top of this matter. The Christmas release of the two movies – Marley & Me and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the former Jen’s while the latter Brad’s – has proven to be an unpredictable race. As it turns out, Marley & Me grossed at $14.8M, around $3M more than Benjamin Button.
Well I would have to say that this is a great Christmas present for the actress, who, despite releasing amicable words about the “competition,” is certainly harboring some secret hope that she could one up her ex this time around. Yeah, I am probably going out on a limb here by writing that but hey, she is human after all and any human being would harbor a desire of that sort, right?
All I can say is congratulations to Jen on the success of her Christmas release! Same to Brad Pitt, I guess.
In Movie Theaters This Weekend: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’
As the summer of threes continue, another Pirates movie hits screens this weekend, that is if you haven’t already caught the film.
Johnny Depp returns to us as Captain Jack Sparrow in the swashbuckling movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. With high adventure, a little bit of humor & a lot of fun, this blockbuster is getting the box office rolling off to a good start.
Also in theaters this weekend is Ashley Judd’s Bug. Judd stars as a lonely waitress who becomes paranoid that there are actually bugs crawling under her skin. I have a sneaking feeling that if you’re terrified of insects, this isn’t the one for you!
All I have left to say is this before the weekend swallows us whole, “Arrrr!”
In Movie Theaters This Weekend: ‘Spider-Man 3’
Well, the summer blockbusters are officially here, as far as I’m concerned. The much-awaited, highly-anticipated, much-talked-about Spider-Man 3 is finally here!
Tobey Maguire takes on the Spidey mask once again in this crime-fighting, web-slinging powerful new Spider-Man movie. Spider-Man 3 promises to entice us with not only one villain, but two- and really three if you think about it enough.
It’s going to be an amazing & crowded movie theater experience, so you had better get those tickets soon!
Lucky You, also premieres this weekend. The Eric Bana-starring film is about a card player who sets out to win the World Series of Poker, as well as the interest of actress Drew Barrymore.
Tell you what, just skip Lucky You & watch Spidey a few times, then call it a weekend well-spent!

In Movie Theaters This Weekend: ‘Vacancy’
In theaters this weekend, be prepared to find something else to do, like feed the ducks at your local pond or the like.
If you haven’t seen a preview for the movie Vacancy, then you must be living in a very secretive cave, since the preview has been broadcasting just about everywhere.
This thriller that stars Luke Wilson & Kate Beckinsale is about a couple with car problems that check into a shoddy motel. Wilson & Beckinsale’s characters happen to discover hidden cameras watching them in their motel room & find themselves the victims of a snuff film.
Sounds more like an indie film gone large, doesn’t it? Can we say skip? Yep, I think we can.
Also hitting movie screens this weekend is the new Ryan Gosling film Fracture. Gosling stars as an assistant to the D.A. who is prosecuting a confessed killer, Anthony Hopkins, but things do not seem as simple as when he set out on the case.
Have to admit, this one kinda sounds interesting, right? A maybe, but only because of Sir Hopkins.
Another newbie to the screens is Hot Fuzz, a movie about a top London cop who is incidentally transferred to a rural town. Looks rather cute, a savior for this weekend’s releases if you ask me.
And lastly, In the Land of Women will see its movie debut. This film, which stars Adam Brody & Meg Ryan, focuses on a young man with a broken heart who moves in to care for his grandmother & finds his way into the lives of the family living across the street. This is going to need another skip, please.
All in all, not too hot of a weekend at the movie theaters. But at least we have Hot Fuzz & Fracture to keep us company, eh?
