Whether or not zombies are real, disasters are and it’s important to be prepared for them. When it comes to family life, a disaster can be as personal as a job loss or as traumatic as a death in the family. Mother nature often throws some pretty significant disters toward humans as well.
It’s important to be prepared for danger, whether it’s real life or horror movie danger, by having a plan and having items on hand that can help you survive. Here are a few of the things you should have on hand in case of emergencies.
Have A Plan
You should have a plan that involves your whole family. In fact, it can help to sit down together, especially around tornado season, monsoon season, and other time when natural disasters are more common. In this time, go over emergency plans.
Your emergency plans should include where you will meet if you are not all together, the items you need to survive if stores are closed, power is off and water is scarce. It should also include time taken to run through safety plans, such as getting into position for tornadoes or timing how long it takes to get ready to evacuate the home.
Food And Water
A couple of the biggest things that you need to make sure that you have on hand are food and water. People need food and water in order to survive, although you can go quite some time without food. Water is another story, since the human body is made up of 60 percent water.
Have shelf stable foods that don’t expire quickly, and make sure you have enough for everyone in your home. Make sure you also have plenty of water stored for everyone. While you can survive about a week without water, you should have a minimum of a gallon of water per day per person put away for emergencies.
Safety Items
You must have a first aid kit in your home. It helps to have one in your vehicle as well, just in case an emergency happens on the road. Safety items may also include trauma kits, a first aid book, an extra cell phone for emergencies, and extra medications for those on prescription medications.
Keep your safety items together and in a place they are easy to get to when they are needed.
Things You May Not Have Thought Of
Batteries are a miracle item that everyone should have, with a few extras to connect them to. This really cool infographic shows you how to make a flashlight with batteries, a fire, and even how to use them to make a motor.
You may also want to have what they call a bug out bag put together, in case an emergency causes you to leave your home and you have to venture out into an unsure world. This bag should contain many of the things already mentioned in this article, plus some extra clothes, sleeping bag and more.
