Relationships and love are at the center of most TV programs, at least tangentially. Sometimes you can compare your successes with TV character successes. Sometimes you watch reality TV shows just to see how much of a train wreck other people’s lives can be. But sometimes it’s interesting just to theorize how your own concepts of love, engagements, and weddings fit with that of mass consciousness.
Some of the shows that you can look at to pique your curiosity include reality shows featuring bachelors and bachelorettes, reality shows about real housewives, bridezillas in progress, and ever-popular soap operas for people who are interested in extended timelines.
Reality Bachelors and Bachelorettes
For the last several years, there have been all sorts of reboots of reality bachelor and bachelorette competitions. They feature all kinds of canned opportunities for people to get to know each other. And then there are always the episodes that feature the proposals and the engagement ring. Officially, the people in the shows are not actors and actresses, but you do get left wondering just how much of it is scripted in the end. As far as entertainment value goes, many people find this to be their apex of interest.
Real Housewives
If you choose to watch the real housewives series on TV, you’re treated to subsections of culture that you might not run into otherwise. And the way the characters talk to each other about sex, love, romance, and marriage can really make you think about how appreciative and grateful you are about your own situation. Some of the people that end up on TV are rich but are a real mess emotionally, and end up being sympathetic characters rather than ones you admire.
The Bridezillas
A few TV shows have taken on the idea of the bridezilla and given newly engaged couples something to avoid at all costs. The stress, anger, frustration, and resentment that come from some of the women in these shows can give you a lot of characteristics to avoid in your own personal undertakings toward getting your own wedding ready.
Soap Operas
Soap operas over the decades have centered on relationships and love as well. They can stretch a theme out for years, and the audience is expected to appropriate a certain degree of suspension of disbelief. For the people who follow them religiously over the years, these characters can end up living close to their hearts. Soap opera actors and actresses sit in that realm between real acting and reality acting, so you see people on the screen who are not so spectacularly different from you, but have managed to make their way onto the screen to entertain you with their antics.
